In the craziest seasons I try to eliminate the word busy from my vocabulary. It is easy to dwell on everything on our plates and complain about feeling swamped. I fall in to this trap all the time! That being said, I think we can all agree everybody is busy these days. Complaining about busy seasons can quickly spiral into a competition of who is the busiest, how full our Google calendars are, and what crazy things we are doing just to stay awake. I spent my early twenties saying yes to everything and not listening to my body.
Instead of focusing on this, I am spending my mid-twenties as an advocate for quick, valuable solutions that will leave me feeling refreshed and ready to tackle whatever the day may bring. Enjoy these tips and tricks for finding solutions for health and happiness in the fullest seasons.
Know Your Peak Times of Productivity
As a morning person, I know that most of my energy and best thinking come within the first part of the day. For far too long I tried to be both a morning person and late night person. I would get up early in the morning and stay up way too late, fitting as much as I possibly could in a day. You can imagine how this turned out! When I started paying attention to my peak times of productivity and energy, I understood what my body needed at different points throughout the day. For example, I can focus in on strenuous tasks or projects best in the morning, but come early afternoon, I need a snack or walk around the office to keep me going.
Schedule Activity & Rest
This summer I’ve been biking, walking, and doing yoga most mornings as a way to get the blood flowing and jump into the day ahead. Again, I am listening to my body and learning that it tolerates activity best in the morning. To avoid snoozing my alarm clock (which definitely still happens as a morning person), I schedule my activity and rest each week. My schedule varies greatly from week to week. Every Sunday I sit down and evaluate which days I should incorporate specific activities and opportunities to rest in my schedule. For example, I have night class Tuesday until 10:00 p.m. and Wednesday mornings are tough. Instead of scheduling a bike ride or yoga class on these mornings, I schedule rest and give my permission to sleep longer. If I do not do this, it honestly does not happen.
Get Your Nutrients In
Last, but certainly not least, getting my nutrients in is the easiest to forget, but so important. This is one solution I have a hard time naturally incorporating into my lifestyle in the busiest seasons. Most days it is easier to go straight from my morning activities to work, skip lunch, or rush home for a quick dinner. I know, it’s not great. I recently got in the habit of bringing more portable snacks with me. If I am running off to a meeting or going straight from yoga class to my work, I bring Dannon® Oikos® Nonfat Yogurt Drinks with me without have to sacrifice time, money, or quality. They provide a portable source of protein, 0% fat and the best taste in a convenient consumption method. Plus, they are now available in a 4 pack at Walmart. Hello stocking up and saving even more time!
