March is the month when all Minnesotans get a little stir crazy. Even for a winter-loving girl like me, the fluctuating temperatures and gray skies get a bit dull. This March, a friend and I decided to beat the winter blues by trying something different. A brand new Board & Brush studio recently opened in the Twin Cities and we signed up for a class!
Board & Brush provides interactive workshops for guests to make custom wood signs. They are the masters of making a DIY experience enjoyable – and successful! I cannot tell you how many projects I attempt at home and never finish. Within three hours, I started and completed a project I will forever love! Liz and I had a hard time choosing which sign we each wanted to make, but finally settled on two that would work well in our homes. I did not realize before the class that everything can be customized – including the stain color, amount of distress, and paint colors. Talk about choices and decisions!
Jenn and Andrew, the instructors and owners, are amazing! They are so good at going step by step and making sure everyone is on the same page. We started with all raw materials and transformed the wood into completed signs by the end of the night. My favorite part was distressing the wood. Everyone received earplugs and went to town on damaging their pieces of wood. Being the rule follower I am, this step was definitely not natural for me, but I love how much character and depth was added to the boards through this step. After sanding and distressing, we stained, assembled, painted, and polished our boards. At the end of the night, I felt invested and excited about my completed board, because of the effort and skill that went into it.
We loved our Board & Brush experience! And it is an added bonus that our husbands appreciate the personalized projects now displayed in our homes!
