Take the Pressure Off

IMG_1133

It is amazing to think about the amount of pressure we put on ourselves. Pressure to do more, be our best selves and achieve as much as we can. In the day to day rhythms of life it seems normal until we simply can’t keep up. We become emotional, burdened and tired, but cannot seem to pinpoint why. Life is too overwhelming and we fall into a slump of inactivity, going from one extreme of doing too much to another extreme of doing nothing. It’s possible this is just the way I experience life, but I don’t think I am alone.

Our society puts an immense amount of value on constantly being busy while whispering in our ears that we are not good enough. Wow is that a bummer of a combination! If I take a nap, I instantly feel guilty or behind for the other tasks I should have been doing. If I go a week without blogging (hello last week), I believe the lies that I will lose followers and the hard work put in up to this point. After a long day at work, my mind has a hard time resting and being okay with taking a break. Friends, I don’t believe this is how we were intended to live.

We are so distracted by what we think we are supposed to be doing that we miss living the life set before us. Our to-do lists dominate plans instead of allowing room to be spontaneous and say yes to anything not on the schedule. As soon as one task is completed, ten more are added. How easy it is to move on instead of sitting, processing and celebrating. Does this hustle sound familiar?

Again, maybe this post is simply preaching to myself, but I encourage you to think about your own life. Where are you stretched too thin? What pressure are you experiencing? Where is that pressure coming from? When was the last time you felt content with where you are and what you are doing? If we truly want to live in the less is more mentality, then we need to move past simply making capsule wardrobes and let this mindset permeate our hearts. Take the pressure off. Believe that less is more. Try to be who you are, where you are, in this exact moment.

  • Yes. THIS. Exactly. Lately I’ve been so overwhelmed (my husband and I are launching our own book publishing company!) and between the meetings with attorneys, accountant, and business coaches plus running my blog and his social media business and our family we are just stretched WAY too thin. Our office was closed on Friday for the holiday and we had no plans on Saturday so I slept until 3pm! Can you believe it?! 3pm! That’s insane but I was obviously exhausted. (Praise God for an understanding husband that let me sleep!).

    • Oh friend, it sounds like you are in a crazy season right now! I am so glad you can relate to this post. It is amazing how our bodies have subtle ways of telling us to slow down (like sleeping in late)! I hope and pray you are continually rejuvenated! Remember to give yourself grace. XOXO

  • So relating to this right now……I think we often spread ourselves way to thin and then lose sight of what’s important and we suffer from burnout or even physical ailments. Great reminder to just stop and be.

    • Yes!! Amen! I know my body slows down and does not function as well when I am spread too thin. Many times it is too late before I realize. I am trying to do a better job of listening to my body earlier!

  • No, you’re definitely not alone. I think most of this pressure we feel, or the guilt of not being able to get more done, is coming from ourselves. We should sometimes take a step back to see what is really important. I just have a hard time doing this, although I know it is necessary.

    • Yes, it is a lot easier said than done, that’s for sure. I think that is where community comes into play and giving one another subtle reminders of grace over doing. Thanks for sharing your perspective!

  • So true! I agree with this all and this is something I’m learning in big ways right now! Enjoy your rest. Trust Jesus. Focus on what matters!! xoxo

    • Trusting Jesus above all else is so important! It is easy to get lost in the shuffle, but focusing on what really matters is what life is all about. Thanks for sharing, Beth! I’m cheering you on!

  • You aren’t alone lovely lady. I feel a lot of pressure from work at the moment, it’s intense and we are expected to do overtime too so trying to pace myself.

    • I often feel a lot of pressure from work too and know how tiring overtime hours can get. I hope you are able to find rest and peace in this crazy season of yours!

You’re not alone! I’m in my junior/senior year in high school and have multiple exams per week. I tend to put so much pressure on my self and get super stressed. I try and give myself some time each day to do things I enjoy. Self care is super important <3
